Explainer Video

I was tasked with creating an explainer video to help target customers better understand our College Renters Insurance product.

Having had no prior experience writing a script or producing a video, I got to work doing some research on what typical explainer videos were like at the time. In my research, I collected a variety of possible ways of communicating info such as: recorded video, animated illustrations, and text-heavy/powerpoint-looking videos.

After evaluating the effort and cost to produce each type of video, I chose to go with simple animations for this project. This would open us up to the largest amount of video creator contractors within our price range.

At this point, I moved on to writing the script for the video. The script needed to be consistent with the language we used on our product pages and marketing materials, and it needed to simplify and concisely communicate the features and benefits of College Renters Insurance. Due to very heavy industry regulations, the script also needed to be approved by our underwriter’s compliance department, to make sure that this video would not break any legal rules or regulations.

Once the script was ready, I connected with an approved contractor to start work on the video. The contractor that was chosen specialized in the whiteboard video animation style and had some contacts that would be able to record the scripted voiceover.

We collaborated over the course of 2 weeks to produce storyboards and make sure we were aligned on how each part of the video and its illustrations would look and feel. After these 2 weeks, the contractor and I were in regular communication as we checked in to make sure the illustrations, animation, and voiceovers were turning out the way we intended.

The final result was a cheerful, informative explainer video that would be able to be used in marketing materials for years to come.
